A 35/5 MFD capacitor looks identical on the shelf. The one that fails after 14 months and the one that still reads within tolerance after seven summers are separated by things you cannot see from the outside. A high quality AC capacitor holds its rated capacitance, converts very little electrical energy into heat, survives thermal cycling, and fails in a controlled way if something goes wrong.
That conclusion matters because most replacement decisions are made from the numbers printed on the old can. Those numbers are necessary, but they are not enough. The next three sections explain what to check before you install or stock another unit.
The first measure of capacitor quality is whether the component can hold its stated electrical values under load, not just at 25 °C on a bench.
Microfarads (MFD) are the working value that determines motor torque and current phase shift. A run capacitor with a ±5% tolerance is generally what a quality component should meet. On a 35 MFD capacitor, ±5% means the acceptable range is 33.25 to 36.75 MFD. A ±10% part may read 31.5 MFD at the low end, and that difference can weaken compressor starting torque and increase motor current during start.
Most OEM-style replacements in our catalog, including the CBB65R1 motor run capacitor, are produced around a tight tolerance and are tested at 50/60 Hz before shipment. If a supplier cannot quote tolerance, that is a red flag.

Voltage rating is about margin, not about matching a number exactly. A capacitor rated 370 V is common on 230/240 V residential circuits, but a 440 V or 450 V rated component gives extra clearance for line swells, harmonic heating, and high ambient temperatures. Using a higher rated voltage in the same microfarad value is generally safe as long as the physical size fits. Going below the original voltage rating is not safe.
For outdoor condenser compartments, the difference between a 370 V and a 450 V part often shows up in callbacks. A quality 450 V capacitor does not work harder on a 240 V line; it simply has more electrical headroom.
Internal heat is the main killer of AC capacitors. One of the first measurements that separates good film from poor film is dissipation factor, often called tan delta. A high quality metallized polypropylene film capacitor keeps tan delta low, typically at or below 0.002 at line frequency when new. A rising dissipation factor means more internal heating, faster aging, and a shorter service life.
Equally important is self-healing. When a small dielectric fault develops, strong metallized film evaporates a tiny area around the fault, clears the short, and allows the capacitor to keep working. Weak film cannot clear reliably, so a minor defect becomes a hard failure.
Heat comes from two directions: the ambient environment and the capacitor's own losses. A capacitor installed next to a compressor in an outdoor cabinet may see continuous temperatures above 50 °C, with peaks far higher. Under those conditions, every extra degree of internal heating accelerates degradation of the dielectric film.
Quality units are designed for the operating temperature of the application. In practice, that means a run capacitor should be rated for at least 70 °C and should have passed the endurance requirements in IEC 60252-1 or an equivalent standard before it leaves the factory. An inexpensive capacitor that fails the same test may work for one season and then drift below tolerance or bulge.
Physical construction has a direct effect on thermal behavior. Aluminum cases conduct heat away from the winding, which is why CBB65-type capacitor bodies are usually metal rather than plastic. A well-sealed end cover and correctly dimensioned metal can help maintain a lower internal temperature. We explain that relationship in more detail in our thermal management guide for AC capacitors.
The difference between a nuisance failure and an unsafe failure is often mechanical. A quality AC capacitor should contain a pressure-sensitive interrupter that opens the electrical path if internal pressure builds up. This is sometimes marked as a safety class P2 style device or evaluated under IEC 60252-1 / UL 810. The capacitor should be expected to fail open, not to burst its case.
Certification marks are not decoration. They document that the component was tested for overpressure, endurance, and dielectric strength. If the same part number is sold with and without certification depending on market, there is a reason for the price difference.
Mechanical quality is easier to see. The case should be free of sharp crimps, the terminal studs should not rotate when you pull on a wire, and the cover should be fixed so moisture cannot work its way through the seal. For dual capacitors, the C, H, and F terminal markings should be legible and unambiguous.
High quality also means the right technology for the duty cycle. A run capacitor and a start capacitor are not interchangeable.
Compressor motors and condenser fan motors are energized for hours at a time. They need a metallized film run capacitor designed for continuous AC duty. A CBB60 motor run capacitor is a standard choice for water pumps and many fan motors, while CBB65 types are used in larger air conditioning shells where aluminum case cooling and a pressure interrupter matter. If the original part is a dual capacitor, the compressor and fan microfarad values are in the same package and both need the same quality.
CBB60 motor run capacitors in our range are specified for continuous operation, with clear voltage and capacitance markings.

Start capacitors deliver a high-current boost for a short interval and are then removed from the circuit. They have different construction and should not be used as run capacitors. A CD60 motor starting capacitor is the kind of component that supports a difficult start under load, but putting it in a permanent bypass application increases temperature and shortens life dramatically.
For hard-start situations, choose the capacitance value the motor data sheet requires, keep the duty cycle short, and follow the manufacturer's mounting instructions. A quality CD60 motor starting capacitor will state its rated voltage, capacitance, and duty cycle on the label.

| Check | What quality means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitance tolerance | ±5% for run capacitors | Preserves starting torque and motor current |
| Voltage rating | 370 V minimum, 440/450 V with margin | Handles line swells without accelerated aging |
| Dissipation factor | Low tan delta with stable film | Less self-heating and longer life |
| Temperature rating | Rated for hot cabinet conditions | Prevents premature dielectric failure |
| Protective device | Pressure interrupter / fail-open design | Reduces risk of case rupture |
Start with the electrical ratings, then examine thermal endurance, safety, and physical construction. When you are stocking replacement parts for multiple systems, compare those criteria against the original component and check the exact values for each model. If a part is ambiguous about tolerance, test standard, or duty cycle, it is not a high quality choice.
If you need help matching a capacitor to a specific compressor or fan motor, you can contact our team directly with the original part numbers. We also publish reference material, such as our IEC 60252-1 verification guide for CBB65 capacitors, to support sourcing decisions.
